Personal Achievement Story: Crying at the bus stop was “Tara”, standing along side was her mother; trying to wipe Tara’ s tears away. No dress shop will make Tara’ s prom dress (because of the time frame and Tara’s size) without at least $250 down. The mother complained that all she had was $250 and there is no one else to turn to. Tara will have to forgive her mom. My response, “I’ll make Tara’ s dress for half of that amount.” In Summary: Tara was voted “Best Dressed” at her school prom (Bay View High School – 1990). Tara told her friend, Bebe “Best Dressed” (Harold Vincent High School – 1991). Bebe told her friend, Tisha “Best Dressed” (Custer High School – 1992 and 1993). I am currently volunteering and contributing my expertise to the children and adults of  OlsenArts Theater Group.

                                           Shirley McCoy, Artistic Director

Shirley McCoy is a singer, songwriter, poet, actor

As with many prominent vocalists, began her singing career at a very young age with the church choir. Her soulful young voice landed her a position with the adult choir at the tender age of ten.

As Ms. Shirley’s interests in the performing arts grew, she participated in her high school Drama Class and found that she enjoyed the art of acting. Desiring to advance in the arts, she and her brother formed a small band and entered into various talent contests. Needless to say, they won an impressive share of winning trophies and prizes. In becoming quite skilled in the business; the band took on new members. Together, they would land several performing contracts with various nightclubs in California.

Over the years Ms. Shirley would go back and forth from singing in nightclubs to singing gospel songs with her mother, two sisters and brother-in-law. The quintet would perform mainly at gospel concerts and at church.

In addition to her musical talents, Ms. Shirley began writing poems in her young adult years. Once she puts “pen to paper”, it takes only minutes for her to produce a fantastic piece of literature. Ms. Shirley also wrote pop songs for the band. Her most recent songwriting skills proved heartwarming; it being a song that she wrote and recorded for her grandchildren while on vacation.

In 1981 Ms. Shirley decided to put going back and forth aside. Ultimately, dedicating her multiplicity of talents to the Lord. Olsenarts Theater Group looks forward to bringing to the community even more innovative and uplifting performing arts projects with such an artistic and spiritual woman on our team.
